Abinader kicks off Ciudad Colonial tourism with electromobility

President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado unveiled the Ciudad Colonial Electromobility Route, a project designed to improve the visitor experience in Santo Domingo's historic district and attract a traveler profile that currently spends little time in the capital, according to Arecoa.

The initiative fits the diversification strategy the Tourism Ministry has been pushing for years. The Ciudad Colonial holds the country's largest concentration of boutique hotels and a UNESCO-listed heritage site, yet it has competed at a disadvantage against the sun-and-beach hubs. An electromobility route addresses one of the classic visitor problems: touring the old town without relying on taxis or a rental car.

The move makes economic sense. Every cruise passenger who steps off in Sans Soucí and every tourist who spends an extra night in Santo Domingo leaves foreign currency in restaurants, shops and museums, not just at the airport. Clean connectivity inside the historic perimeter can lift average visitor spending and extend stays, something no beach hub guarantees on its own. Worth watching is how this route integrates with the existing hotel offer and whether MITUR backs it with signage and clear schedules for independent travelers.
