The Colonial City now has electric buses
Santo Domingo's Colonial City now has its electromobility route. The launch was part of President Luis Abinader's agenda, according to Listín Diario. The electric bus fleet starts with a stated goal: improving air quality in the historic district.
The move matters for the industry. The Colonial City is the country's main urban tourism asset, the one that welcomes the cruise passenger stepping off the ship at Sansouci and the traveller sleeping in a boutique hotel on Calle Las Damas. Putting clean transport inside that perimeter improves the visitor experience and gives Santo Domingo an argument Punta Cana cannot copy: walkable heritage with modern mobility.
What remains to be seen is frequency, stops and whether the service connects with the district's cultural offer. For the hotelier in the area, every tourist moving without a car is a tourist staying longer in the neighbourhood. For the country, it is one more line in the story Dominican tourism has been telling well for years: growing without sacrificing the surroundings.
