Summary: Minister David Collado highlights that Puerto Rico has become a major source market for the Dominican Republic, confirming a strategic shift in Caribbean tourism flows.

## Article

**David Collado** has made it clear again: Puerto Rico has become a major source market for tourists coming to the Dominican Republic. According to [the Ministry of Tourism's official note](https://noticias.mitur.gob.do/ministro-noticias/david-collado-dice-puerto-rico-se-ha-convertido-en-un-importante-mercado-emisor-de-turistas-para-rd/), this is no casual remark.

Why does it matter? Because it confirms a real shift in Caribbean dynamics. For years, Puerto Rico and the DR competed for the same long-haul traveler. Now, with stronger air links between San Juan and Santo Domingo (and Punta Cana), the flow is two-way and growing. Puerto Ricans already know the resort concept but want beaches and added variety, and they are finding it right next door.

My take: this is a smart opportunity we must handle well. It is not just about counting arrivals but **capturing spending and repeat visits**. The roadmap is straightforward:

- **Speed up airport processes** for Puerto Rican travelers who value efficiency.

- **Boost food and culture offerings** in sun-and-beach destinations to encourage returns.

- **Work with local tour operators** on short weekend packages.

Collado putting this on the table is the best sign that MITUR is already looking that way. Now it is about execution.
