The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, made it clear: Puerto Rico has become an important source market for tourists heading to the Dominican Republic. According to his statements reported by Acento, the neighboring island is no longer just a competing destination, but a partner that sends us a growing number of travelers. And this is no coincidence.
We've been seeing it for months: more air routes between San Juan and Punta Cana or Santo Domingo, and more Puerto Ricans choosing our beaches for long weekends or holiday breaks. The proximity, short flights, and Dominican hotel offerings are unbeatable for them. In my opinion, this is a target that hoteliers in Bavaro, La Romana, and Puerto Plata should pamper with specific promotions and last-minute packages.
The fact that the Minister himself puts this on the table signals that MITUR will bet on this channel. I think it's a smart move. If we manage to capture this tourist well, we can reduce dependency on distant markets and have a more stable flow. The question is: are the resorts ready to serve them in Caribbean Spanish and with last-minute offers? I hope so.
