Summary: The founder of Grupo Puntacana receives the WTTC's highest recognition for his role in turning a stretch of coast into the country's tourism engine.

## Article

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) awarded **Frank Rainieri** the **WTTC Icon Award**, a recognition of his career developing **Punta Cana**. The news comes via [Arecoa](https://www.arecoa.com/personalidades/2026/10/08/rainieri-galardonado-con-el-wttc-icon-award-por-su-trayectoria-en-el-desarrollo-de-punta-cana/), and it is no minor prize: the WTTC does not hand out this distinction every year.

Rainieri arrived at a stretch of coast that was practically sand and scrub and turned it into one of the largest tourism hubs in the Caribbean. That work pulled in hotel investment, flights, jobs and foreign currency that are felt across the entire Eastern region today. The award looks at his career, but also at what that model meant for the country.

The broader read is simple. Dominican tourism has in Punta Cana its most replicated success story, and this prize confirms it before the global industry. That experience is worth studying as a guide for destinations still looking for takeoff, not as a closed chapter.
