Sargassum is no longer a seasonal nuisance. According to [Dominican Today](https://dominicantoday.com/sargassum-becomes-a-national-problem/), the massive arrival of this seaweed is significantly dropping tourist numbers in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, a destination competing head-to-head with Punta Cana and Bavaro for the same beach traveler.

No point looking away: if this is a national problem for Mexico, for us it is a warning that no Caribbean shoreline is safe. We saw it in 2019 and again in 2022 in Samana and Santo Domingo.

And here's the twist: this challenge opens a window for the Dominican Republic. Whoever manages their coast best gets the disappointed tourists cancelling their trips to the Mexican Caribbean. That means investment in anti-pollution barriers, beach cleaning equipment and an early monitoring plan led by MITUR.
- **Satellite monitoring**: anticipate before tons reach the shore.
- **Floating barriers**: technology already working in Punta Cana that can scale up.
- **Honest communication**: travelers reward transparency, not hiding the issue.

In my view, sargassum proves the Caribbean needs a joint climate strategy, not high-season patches. The silver lining: the destination that cracks it first takes the prize.
