Summary: The WTTC turns its Hotel Sustainability Basics into an independent seal. A chance for Dominican hotels to lead on sustainability with clear rules.

## Article

The **WTTC** has just taken a step the industry has been calling for: turning its **Hotel Sustainability Basics** programme into an **independent certification**. As [Arecoa](https://www.arecoa.com/hoteles/2026/07/17/wttc-impulsa-certificacion-sostenible-para-el-sector-hotelero/) reports, it's a smart move.

Until now, Basics was a voluntary tool, a set of minimum guidelines. But the market, especially European tour operators, no longer settles for soft commitments. They want a real seal, one that shows, that compares, that weighs on the purchase decision. Here the WTTC is putting its credibility on the line: if the certification is rigorous yet workable, hotels in **Punta Cana, Bávaro or Puerto Plata** can jump into a real differentiation lane.

My take: this is a **golden opportunity** for Dominican hospitality. It's not about playing catch-up with Europe, it's about getting ahead. Whoever certifies their properties first with this independent seal gets a direct sales argument in Nordic, British, and German markets. I hope MITUR and hotel associations pick up the baton and help small and mid-sized hotels make the leap. Sustainability is no longer a bonus: it's the price of admission.
