The Dominican Republic welcomed 1,653,129 cruise passengers in the first half of 2026, up 1.36% from the same period last year, according to industry data reported by Dominican Today. The country recorded 482 ship calls across its ports. The numbers are solid, but the real story is who is taking the lion's share.
Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings together account for over 84% of those passengers. The dominance of the big three is staggering. And let's be honest, it's no surprise: they operate the largest fleets and the best-oiled Caribbean itineraries. But the figure is so high it begs the question: are we looking at strategic dependence or a well-greased ecosystem?
My take: having these three giants running at full throttle in Dominican ports is a guarantee of volume and quality. They bring high-spending passengers who fill tours, excursions and duty-free shops. But the challenge is not to put all eggs in one basket. If one of them decides to shift its homeport or hub to another Caribbean destination tomorrow, the impact would be felt. The opportunity lies in continuing to attract mid-size and boutique lines to diversify the mix, while keeping the big ones happy. That's where the whole sector wins.
