The Ministry of Environment has launched a special plan to curb the advance of sargassum on the Eastern beaches. According to Arecoa, the measure responds to the massive presence of this algae on Dominican coasts, a phenomenon we know well in the sector and that tests us every high season.
From Tourism News, here's the thing: this is not a patch, it's a sign the government is taking the health of our main tourism asset seriously. Punta CanaPunta CanaThe main tourism hub of the Dominican Republic, on the eastern tip, famous for white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts and its own international airport., BávaroBávaroA beach area next to Punta Cana with one of the Caribbean's largest hotel clusters and a long white-sand shoreline. and La Romana are the most exposed destinations, and a coordinated plan can make the difference between a summer season with spotless beaches and one full of complaints on social media.
The key now is execution. Will there be enough machinery? Will it coordinate with hotels? I'm glad to see movement, but sargassum doesn't care about good plans: it demands resources on the sand. Hopefully this is the first step of a permanent strategy, not a last-minute reaction. Dominican tourism deserves it.
