The Environment Ministry has drawn a line: no more cars on Playa Encuentro, the beach 4 kilometers from Cabarete in Puerto PlataPuerto PlataA north-coast city and province, birthplace of Dominican tourism, home to the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, Victorian architecture and the Amber Cove cruise port.. According to Dominican Today, the agency dusted off resolution 68-2005, which already banned vehicle circulation there. So this isn't a new rule, it's the hammer finally dropping on a practice that had gone wild.
Why does this matter for tourism? Because Playa Encuentro isn't just a world-class surf spot: it's a natural asset that, if mismanaged, loses its appeal. I see this as an opportunity to redesign the visitor experience: pedestrian walkways, controlled access, eco-friendly services. Protecting the ecosystem isn't a brake, it's the foundation for quality growth in Puerto Plata. Hotels and tour operators now need to step up with responsible mobility options.
My take: the Environment Ministry is right to enforce the rules. Now MITUR and local players must turn this restriction into a competitive edge. A well-cared-for Playa Encuentro is worth far more than any improvised free-for-all.
