ITA Airways wants to fly Rome-Santo Domingo, and that's great news
Air connectivity in the Dominican Republic keeps adding pieces. The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) met with legal representatives of ITA Airways, who confirmed their interest in operating the Rome-Santo Domingo route. That's what Arecoa reports.
This is not a minor announcement. Italy is one of Europe's strongest outbound markets, and today it depends on indirect connections or other airlines' operations. The fact that Alitalia's successor is looking at the Dominican capital says a lot about the destination's positioning, but it also opens a huge door for cultural and city tourism, beyond sun and beach.
My take: Santo Domingo needs more direct flights to feed its urban and MICE offering, and a Rome route fits perfectly to smooth seasonality. The ball is now in the JAC's and the airline's court to nail down frequencies and dates. If confirmed, Europe stops looking at the Caribbean only through Madrid or Paris. Hopefully we'll see that first landing at Las Américas soon.
