Samaná honors four allies behind its tourism surge
The Samaná Tourism Cluster (CTS) and the Samaná Hotels and Tourism Companies Association (Ahetsa) handed out four recognitions during the XI Annual Meeting for the Tourism Development of Samaná. The honorees: the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), Banco Popular Dominicano, Port Samaná and Avolta, formerly Dufry. The reason given by organizers is sustained backing for the destination, which is riding one of its strongest moments in visitor arrivals and projects more cruise passengers.
The detail matters. Samaná has been moving pieces on several boards at once. In October the destination was already talking about its gamble on cruises through Arroyo Barril, and just days earlier four local restaurants made national headlines for sustainable cooking in the summer dish. On top of that came the second road phase in Arroyo Barril launched by Mitur, with Collado leading the charge. The recognition for Port Samaná and Avolta points at the link Samaná needs to grease most: arrival and first impression. A duty-free shop at the airport does not move thousands of rooms, but it does change what a cruise passenger spends in their first hours ashore.
The read for hoteliers is straightforward. Samaná drags a known problem: its airport does not even fill 20% of its seat capacity. Cruises have plugged part of that hole, but the destination still depends on air connectivity catching up. Having Banco Popular and Mitur on that thank-you list suggests financing and public works are part of the plan. What remains to be seen is whether that backing turns into new routes or concrete incentives for airlines.
Three things are worth watching. First, whether cruise passengers who disembark in Arroyo Barril stay overnight in Samaná or go back to the ship. Second, whether the hotel sector builds packages that combine beaches, Las Terrenas and Los Haitises National Park. Third, whether the cluster keeps up this habit of honoring its allies every year, because that helps companies keep investing in a destination that competes with Punta Cana and Puerto Plata at a different scale. Samaná will not beat Bávaro on volume. It can beat it on experience.
