United Airlines is not resting on its laurels. The airline announced that as of September 24, 2026, it will add four new domestic services from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This expansion, according to Suelo Caribe, aims to strengthen its main hub in the region. And although these are domestic routes for now, a stronger hub always ends up boosting international connectivity.

This United move strikes me as smart. More capacity at Newark means more connection options for travelers coming to the Dominican Republic. Why? Because EWR is a key gateway for the U.S. Northeast, a crucial source market for Punta CanaPunta CanaThe main tourism hub of the Dominican Republic, on the eastern tip, famous for white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts and its own international airport., SamanáSamanáA north-eastern peninsula known for humpback whale watching, unspoiled beaches like Rincón and waterfalls such as El Limón., and Puerto PlataPuerto PlataA north-coast city and province, birthplace of Dominican tourism, home to the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, Victorian architecture and the Amber Cove cruise port..

The airline's bet reinforces a trend we already see in the Caribbean: major airlines optimize their hub operations to capture more traffic. For the Dominican tourism sector, this is a clear opportunity. The stronger the Newark hub, the easier it is for American tourists to reach their vacations in the DR. We'll need to watch closely whether these routes eventually have a ripple effect on direct flight offerings to the Caribbean.
