Arajet passes American and becomes the country's second airline
Dominican aviation has a new order. Arajet carried 158,407 passengers in September, excluding connections, and moved ahead of American Airlines, which stayed at 115,406, according to the figures reported by Dominican Today. The top spot still belongs to JetBlue. Three years ago, that picture was unthinkable.
The podium is not the whole story. It is what it means for the country: more seats operated by a local flag carrier, more routes linking provinces to foreign markets and more tourist spending landing directly in destinations such as Punta Cana, Santiago or Santo Domingo. Every flight that used to be routed via Miami now comes in through Dominican airports.
The reading for hoteliers and tour operators is clear: connectivity is diversifying and that opens source markets that until now depended on a single hub. Watch room inventory in secondary destinations, because the flow is going to shift. The number is not a footnote, it is a change of map.
