Wamos Air has placed one of its Airbus A330 aircraft at the service of Gol Linhas Aéreas under a dry lease, as reported by Arecoa. The transformed A330 marks Gol’s debut in long-haul flying. Until now, the Brazilian carrier only operated regional and domestic routes so this is a big step.
What does this mean for the Dominican Republic? Plenty. Brazil is a key source market for destinations like Punta CanaPunta CanaThe main tourism hub of the Dominican Republic, on the eastern tip, famous for white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts and its own international airport. and Santo Domingo, and an A330 capable of transoceanic routes could bring more direct flights. The ACMI partnership with Wamos Air, a Spanish ACMI specialist, gives Gol flexibility to test new routes without committing its own fleet.
From where I sit, this is a clear opportunity for MITUR and Dominican tour operators: time to court Gol with airport fee incentives and joint promotions. If we get these aircraft landing in Puerto PlataPuerto PlataA north-coast city and province, birthplace of Dominican tourism, home to the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, Victorian architecture and the Amber Cove cruise port. or La Romana, Brazilian tourism will jump to the next level.
