Aventúrate RD pushes experience tourism beyond sun and beach
The Dominican offer has always lived on sun and beach, and no one in their right mind wants to give that up. What Aventúrate RD, the program promoted by MITUR, brings is something else: adding layers of experience to the trip the destination already sells. If the Punta Cana tourist stays three extra days to hike a canyon or a coffee route, the business changes shape.
The initiative, according to MITUR, strengthens adventure and experience tourism, a segment that in the Caribbean often takes a back seat to the resort. And that's the opportunity. The Dominican Republic has the geography to compete with Costa Rica: mountains, rivers, coasts, and nature that is not yet fully exploited.
For hoteliers, this is not a distraction. It's a way to extend stays and raise average spending. For the state, more well-organized excursions mean more formality, more local jobs, and more tax revenue. Now the challenge is for operators and hotels to jump on board and package those experiences well. Those who get there first keep the customer who is no longer satisfied with a hammock.
