Bisonó and Lavrov sit down to talk tourism and Haiti

Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor Ito Bisonó met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in New York to address the situation in Haiti, bilateral economic ties and tourism, among other issues of mutual interest, according to Dominican Today.

The meeting puts two sensitive Dominican issues on the same table. On one hand, Haiti remains the factor that shapes the island's stability and, by extension, the sense of safety underpinning the Dominican brand in source markets. On the other, the relationship with Moscow opens the door to a source market with potential for Punta Cana, Samaná or Puerto Plata if air connectivity conditions allow.

The read for the sector is twofold. An active Foreign Ministry in New York projects the Dominican Republic as a stable, connected destination, something European tour operators value when closing season contracts. And any progress on connectivity with Russia, even embryonic, is a line to watch for hoteliers in the East of the country, used to working with long-haul markets.

The news is brief and details are still scarce. What matters is that tourism is named in a high-level conversation. In a country where the industry weighs so heavily on the economy, that is no small detail.
