Frontier Airlines keeps pushing into the Caribbean. As reported by the airline, covered by Suelo Caribe, the ultra-low-cost carrier will launch four new routes between November and December 2025. They connect cities like Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Detroit, Los Angeles, Houston, San Juan, Kansas City and Orlando.
For Dominican tourism pros, this is a clear sign: the US market still craves sun and sand. None of these routes land directly in the Dominican Republic, but the increase in flights to San Juan and Fort Lauderdale opens connection options for travelers who want to reach Punta CanaPunta CanaThe main tourism hub of the Dominican Republic, on the eastern tip, famous for white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts and its own international airport. or Santo Domingo through those hubs.
So what does it mean for the sector? More competition yes, but also more volume. Ultra low-cost airlines like Frontier push prices down, which benefits the price-sensitive traveler who, once in the region, can choose our hotel offer. But if we don't improve direct connectivity, we risk that traveler staying in Puerto Rico. The ball is in MITUR's and investors' court: time to attract those airlines with incentives, not just with beaches.
