Aerodom wins ACI-LAC Green Airport seal and raises the bar in DR
Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI received the Green Airport Recognition from the International Airports Council for Latin America and the Caribbean, as reported by Arecoa. The seal follows work on footprint reduction, energy efficiency and environmental management across the network the company operates nationwide. It is not a showcase award, it is an audited certification.
For the industry, this matters on two fronts. One is commercial: European airlines and tour operators weigh ESG criteria more heavily when negotiating routes and seasonal contracts, and an airport with a green seal makes that conversation easier. The other is operational: lower energy consumption per passenger translates into lower costs for the airport operator, and that eventually lands on the destination's competitiveness.
The Dominican Republic moves more than 8 million tourists a year by air, concentrated in Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Samaná and La Romana. Having the country's main airports on the Caribbean green radar is an asset for MITUR and for hotel investment, which already sells sun and sand with a sustainability narrative. The challenge now is holding the seal year after year, which is where many recognitions fall apart.
