AILA launches automated baggage handling system

Las Américas International Airport took a concrete step in its modernization. In early June, the first phase of its Baggage Handling System (BHS) went live in the southern area of the terminal, as reported by Dominican Today. Luis José López, Communications Director at Aerodom, confirmed the system now moves bags automatically from check-in to the sorting area before loading.

The setup combines conveyor belts, sensors, tag readers and inspection equipment. It adds 360-degree scanning and artificial intelligence tools that generate baggage pre-alerts. For anyone checking a bag, the difference shows up in traceability: each piece can be tracked throughout its journey inside the terminal. Aerodom is already working on phase two, which will extend the automated infrastructure across the airport, and has rolled out upgrades such as version 2.0 of online parking payment.

The move matters more than it looks. Every mishandled bag is an unhappy passenger and a flight operation losing minutes. With the volume AILA handles, automating that flow frees up staff for customer-facing tasks and tightens security controls. For travelers landing in Santo Domingo on their way to Punta Cana or Samaná, the experience starts before they set foot in the terminal. Arrival numbers keep climbing and the airport is answering with real capacity, not promises.
