Cabo Rojo welcomes 5,771 cruise passengers in a single day
The Cabo Rojo terminal in Pedernales received two international cruise ships this Monday carrying 5,771 passengers and 2,264 crew members, as reported by Dominican Today. The vessels were Royal Caribbean International's Independence of the Seas and Holland America Line's Nieuw Amsterdam. Tourism Minister David Collado tied the arrivals to the economic opportunities opening up for local communities through tourism businesses and services.
The number lands better in the national context. That same day, the country welcomed five cruise ships in total, with 15,503 passengers and 6,421 crew across its ports. Around 105 calls are expected in November from lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line. Cabo Rojo, which opened in January 2024, is gaining ground on international itineraries and that shows in the transport, excursions, restaurants and handicrafts moving around the pier.
The parallel with what we have already covered at Turismo News is direct: in September we reported that Cabo Rojo is targeting 250,000 cruisers by the end of 2026 and that the port had entered the global top 3 cruise ports. That projection was no empty toast. Every call like Monday's moves it a little closer. We also looked at what Pedernales teaches about investing with patience. That is the real frame: a destination built call by call, not overnight.
For the Punta Cana or Bávaro hotelier, the read is not competition. It is diversification of the country offer and a new door for the cruise traveler who may not have considered the Dominican Republic as a stay destination. For the southern tour operator, it is a signal to be ready with product, guides and transport when the ship docks. For the investor, the message is that the south is starting to show measurable traction.
Several things bear watching. If the 105 calls in November are met, Cabo Rojo's cruise passenger pace enters a different phase. And it will matter whether that arrival turns into real spending in Pedernales and not just passengers who disembark, walk and go back to the ship. That is the opportunity: turning every docking into revenue for the province and one more reason for the south to enter the Dominican hotel conversation.
