Dominican Republic nears 8.6 million visitors through August
The figure came from Tourism Minister David Collado: between January and August 2026 the country welcomed 8,556,415 visitors, up 6.9% on the same stretch in 2025. Dominican Today reported the number.
That counts airports and cruise ports together, the metric MITUR uses to read the real pulse of the sector. With August now closed, the Caribbean summer is holding steady against Cancún, Jamaica and the eastern islands. Punta Cana and Bávaro keep pulling the weight, with the ports of La Romana, Samaná and Puerto Plata chipping in on the cruise side.
The record matters, but what it leaves behind matters more. Every visitor landing at an airport or a cruise pier pays fees, spends, books rooms and drives the hotel and tour operator chain in provinces where tourism is the first source of income. Nearly 8.6 million in eight months is room to keep investing in infrastructure, training and product. The task ahead is making that growth land with equal force outside the traditional circuit.
