Dominican tourism levels up: more diverse and higher spending

Dominican tourism is no longer competing on volume alone. The trend, as reported by Dominican Today, is clear: a more varied supply and travelers with bigger budgets. In my view, that is the best news the sector could get after years of growth built on mass all-inclusives.

What’s behind it? Three main drivers:

• Luxury hotel brands entering the market, pushing up nightly rates and reshaping the visitor profile.

• The growth of specific niches: wellness tourism, weddings, golf, and premium cruises, which spend far more per person than the average.

As the source rightly notes, the industry is moving toward a higher-value proposition, not just more beds. For the country, the direct effect is a greater fiscal impact per visitor and less reliance on plain sun-and-beach tourism.

My take is simple: if MITUR and the private sector manage to back this shift with infrastructure and targeted promotion, the next cycle won’t be about more tourists, it’ll be about better tourism. And that shows up both in public revenue and in the communities living off the sector.
