Banreservas backs Punta Bergantín as the New North
Banreservas executive president Leonardo Aguilera presented Punta Bergantín as the “New North” of Dominican tourism, as reported by Arecoa. The state bank is now backing a development built to spread sun-and-beach supply toward Puerto Plata, with hotels, residences and services inside a single perimeter.
The story matters more for what it means to the treasury than for the headline. Every room that opens in Puerto Plata adds VAT, hotel tax and formal jobs in a province that has been asking for a second wind for years. Banreservas is no ordinary lender: its financial backing is the signal hotel investors watch before moving capital.
The read here is clear. Punta Bergantín competes on the same map as Bávaro and Cap Cana, but its edge is different: it targets the traveler who wants the north, culture and a different stop. If the project moves at the announced pace, Puerto Plata stops being a cruise call and becomes a stay-over destination. That is the real business for tour operators, airlines and hoteliers.
