Santo Domingo runs its ninth marathon and boosts sports tourism
Santo Domingo Corre presented the ninth edition of the Santo Domingo Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, September 18, according to Arecoa. The race once again puts the capital on the Caribbean's long-distance calendar and strengthens a path that is already working for the country: sports tourism.
The impact goes beyond the finish line. A marathon of this size moves hotel rooms in the city, restaurant bookings, transport and shopping in the days before and after the race. For industry professionals, the reading is clear: a runner who travels for an event usually comes with company, spends more than a passing tourist and returns if the experience delivers. The event, according to Arecoa, is consolidating as a showcase for the capital.
Santo Domingo does not compete with Punta Cana on sun and sand, but it can compete on events. The ninth edition proves that sports tourism has room to grow in the city, and it should be seized with packages, joint promotion and an experience that lives up to the international runner. The opportunity is there.
