Meliá leaves Cuba and paves the way for DR

Meliá has definitively stopped operating all its hotels in Cuba, according to Hosteltur. The Spanish chain, for decades the main foreign operator on the island, closes a complex chapter. What does this mean for the Caribbean, and especially for the Dominican Republic?

In my view, this exit frees up resources, focus and capital that Meliá can redirect to destinations with clear rules. And that’s where DR comes in. While Cuba loses a strategic partner, our hotels and resorts gain relevance as a safe bet for investors and tour operators looking for stability.

• More hotel investment: Meliá has a strong foothold in Punta Cana, Bávaro and Puerto Plata. With Cuba off the table, they could accelerate projects here, as industry sources tell me.
• Arrival numbers: DR is already breaking visitor records. Without a giant operating in Cuba, our Caribbean market share goes up.
• MITUR gains leverage: Dominican tourism policy, with incentives and legal security, positions itself as the region’s alternative. This move confirms it.

Don’t get me wrong: this is not a crisis for Cuba, it’s a reshuffle. But for us Dominican tourism pros, it’s a clear signal that the industry looks where trust lives. And that trust is here.
