Punta CanaPunta CanaThe main tourism hub of the Dominican Republic, on the eastern tip, famous for white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts and its own international airport. is no longer just a sun and sand destination: it is an aviation hub going head to head with the Caribbean's biggest players. According to data compiled by Dominican Today, the weekly direct flight schedule shows a connectivity map that keeps expanding.
New York tops the list with 35 weekly direct flights. It is followed by Bogotá (28) and Miami (25). Toronto ranks fourth with 20 frequencies, reflecting Canadians' appetite for the Dominican east coast. Lima and Panama City tie for fifth place with 18 flights each, São Paulo adds 16, and Buenos Aires 14. Bogotá-Ayacucho regional connections and Montreal close the top 10 with 12 weekly flights each.
What stands out to me is South America's weight: four cities from the subcontinent make the top 10. That is no coincidence. Low cost carriers and partnerships with tour operators are driving a flow that was almost entirely North American before. And note this: Santo Domingo does not appear here. Punta Cana's takeoff as the country's main gateway, far ahead of Las Américas, opens huge opportunities for hotels and resorts wanting to tap into that direct traffic bypassing the capital.
